CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – November, 2025 – Last month the University of Virginia (UVA) community began adding the Cavalier Card to their mobile devices. With the help of partners Atrium and Allegion, the successful launch saw thousands of credentials issued in the initial days.

University of Virginia students, faculty and staff can now replace their plastic ID cards with an Apple Wallet or Google Wallet mobile ID to unlock doors, pay for meals and access University services, all without unlocking their phones or watches.

Individuals use the Atrium Connect app to provision the credential. The benefit of the Connect app for provisioning is that most students already use it for other services like account management, purchasing meal plans, adding funds to Cav Cash, photo upload, and a variety of other services.

“Launching mobile credentials at UVA marks a major step forward in enhancing campus life,” said Gheretta Harris, Associate Vice President for Business Services. “This initiative reflects our commitment to delivering secure, seamless, and student-centered technology that meets and supports the modern campus experience our students expect.”

UVA worked with industry-leading campus experience provider, Atrium Campus, as well as the global access and security provider, Allegion, to enable this contact-free mobile wallet solution.

“The student ID has long been at the center of campus life—accessing residence halls and academic buildings, using meal plans and campus cash, checking out books, accessing the rec center, and checking in to activities. The University of Virginia’s move to mobile credentials builds on that role, creating a more modern, secure student experience.” said Tammy Johnson, Atrium Campus President and CEO.  “From an institutional perspective, Atrium and Allegion enabled the university to own their mobile wallet encryption keys, lowering costs and keeping UVA in full control of their ecosystem.  With the first UVA campus buildings designed and built by Thomas Jefferson in the early 1800’s, it’s phenomenal that these buildings are now secured with readers and Wallet-based phone credentials two centuries later.”

Apart from the mobile first access to campus services, Apple and Google wallet credentials can also be instantly and remotely issued, revoked, suspended and reactivated, offering an added level of control, security and fraud protection for the university.

“From the outset of the project, the Cavalier Card Office set a bold vision: ownership of their encryption keys for DESFire, Apple Wallet, and Google Wallet. By taking ownership of this critical layer of security, the University of Virginia ensured they could define and manage the trusted ecosystem of reader partners on their campus,” said Jeff Koziol, Business Development Manager at Allegion – Higher Education & Student ID Wallet Credentials.  “This vision aligned perfectly with Atrium and Allegion’s commitment to secure, future-ready solutions, and together we delivered credentials seamlessly across Elatec readers, Castles vending readers, and 8,000+ Allegion access devices campus-wide.”
